What Is Your Role?

Though the primary responsibility of any pregnancy is placed on the woman, the cooperation and support of her partner are crucial in determining how to proceed with the pregnancy. Often, this role can be confusing and sometimes overwhelming for men, as they often don’t know how to behave in this unfamiliar situation.

If you find yourself in such a situation, you may be asking yourself any of the following questions:

  • What should we do now?
  • Has she had a pregnancy test done?
  • Should we consider an abortion?
  • Is adoption an option?
  • Am I ready to be a father?
  • How important is my opinion?

These questions are completely normal for someone in your situation. However, let’s take that last question first: your opinion is important; in fact, it is often the most important opinion outside of your partner’s, as many women look to their partner as a source of confidence and trust in a situation like this one. You really can make a difference, whether it’s clear at this stage or not.

However, that does not mean that it is strange if you feel uncomfortable. That is a healthy, typical reaction, and it can sometimes take a little while to figure out your role. However, it is important to always remember that communication is key to find the best solution for you and your partner regarding the pregnancy. You should both feel supported, heard and understood — if you are able to accomplish those things, then that will make the entire process easier.
